New Ruddington residents are being reminded to register to vote – to ensure your voice is heard – ahead of the upcoming Police and Crime Commissioner and County Council elections taking place here next month.
Although the poll isn’t until Thursday May 6th, the deadline is fast approaching if you’re not already on the electoral register at your current address. You’ll need to register to vote here by midnight on Monday April 19th.
This year, village residents will go to the polls to vote in two different elections and will select:
- Nottinghamshire County Councillors, who represent Ruddington, and contribute to the development of policies in areas such as transport, social care and children’s services
- Nottinghamshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC), who oversees our local police force and ensures they are prioritising what matters to you
Kath Marriott, Deputy Returning Officer for Rushcliffe Borough Council, says: “Make sure you can take part in these elections by registering to vote before the deadline. It’s an opportunity to make your voice heard and have a say on who represents you on issues that directly affect day-to-day life here in Rushcliffe. If you’re not registered by April 19th, you won’t be able to vote.”
Ailsa Irvine, Director of Electoral Administration and Guidance at The Electoral Commission, adds: “If you have recently turned 18 or moved home, it is particularly important that you act to ensure that you are registered to vote. If you were registered to vote in the last election and your details have not changed, you don’t need to take any action. If in doubt, you can check with your local authority on 0115 981 9911.”
You can register to vote at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote – a process which takes around five minutes to complete.
Voters in Ruddington also have a range of options for casting our ballots – in person either at St Peter’s Rooms or Ruddington Village Hall (depending upon where in our village you live), voting by post, or by appointing someone you trust to vote in your place, known as a ‘proxy’ vote. For those who choose to vote in person, we’re being reassured Ruddington’s polling stations will be ‘COVID-safe’ places to do so on Thursday May 6th.
The deadline to apply for a postal vote is 5pm on April 20th, whilst for a proxy vote it’s 5pm on April 27th.
